Chianti

Tuscany is home to the Chianti region which is well known for its great red wines. The wine can be traced back to the 14th century and was initially a white wine. Over the centuries the borders of the Chianti region have been amended and today the most famous part is the Chianti Classico in the heart of the region. It is the region with the black rooster on its bottles and produces somewhere around 8 million cases of wine per year. For a wine to be classified as Chianti it needs to have at least 80% of the grapes coming from the Sangiovese grape.

While driving around in the Chianti region you will come across plenty of vineyards so be sure to stop by and sample some of their wines. Over the summer months it is recommended to book an appointment in advance, the cost is normally between 10 – 20 Euros and includes a round tour of the vineyard, the story about the production and some samples of their wine.
